In 2016, we sent out onto the wide open road more outstanding independent shows around the country than ever before this year, reaching remote regional and rural communities, playing at major festivals, and even traveling to New Zealand. 2017 is another exciting year with more terrific new shows set to head out to audiences everywhere. But we need your help.

Check out this video to see some of the outstanding artists we are touring over the coming years and please help the outstanding artists you love travel further with a small donation today.

Since 2005, Critical Stages has grown to become one of Australia’s leading producers of independent touring theatre. Our work is supported by the Australia Council for the Arts, recognising our touring work by selecting us as only one of four performing arts companies nationally to be awarded with National Touring Status from 2018-2020. Our brief is to make outstanding theatre accessible to audiences around the country. To achieve this we have been successfully touring to regional, remote, urban and rural audiences in every state and territory around the country. We champion independent theatre artists and companies by assisting them in extending the life of their work, and we support regional communities by giving them access to high quality theatre that they would otherwise not be able to access. Scores of artists are engaged on Critical Stages touring productions every year, traveling to perform in hundreds of towns from Cairns to Albany, and Port Hedland to Broken Hill to tens of thousands of audience members every year.

In 2017 we have five major tours: the brilliant Irish dramatic comedy Stones in his Pockets which has just returned from an 8 week national tour starring Grant Cartwright and Sean Hawkins; the thrilling adaptation of Emile Zola’s classic gothic novel Therese Raquin by Australian playwright/director Gary Abrahams touring nationally for 7 weeks; the wonderfully charming cabaret comedy Reception the Musical;Mary Rachel Brown’s hilarious comedy about a greyhound racing family on the edge, The Dapto Chaser which will be touring through regional NSW;  and Zen the Pigeon Girl, a show for young people and families touring regional NSW.

Our focus for the coming year is to increase access to our tours, by heading further afield to more regional and remote locations than we have previously been able to reach and to deepen our engagement in the communities we visit, developing real skills and long-lasting impact with a program of educational workshops and forums. Meanwhile, we will be expanding our support for independent artists by providing professional opportunities through touring and residency programs and by contributing to building a strong, vibrant and inter-connected national theatre sector.

For some of our audiences, Critical Stages provides the only opportunity to see live performances all year.
Please help us support a vibrant and dynamic arts culture bringing live theatre to every corner of the country by donating to Critical Stages this month. You'll be supporting bringing outstanding theatre to audiences, and giving our leading theatre makers life-changing professional opportunities. In addition to our touring, we also run educational workshops, mentor emerging companies and hold forums on touring around the country leaving a long legacy in all the communities that we visit.
