Critical Stages knows what it is like to be an independent producer. Our core business is to work closely with the independent theatre sector to find another life for the outstanding work being produced by independent companies.

We want to work even closer with those producers, companies, collectives currently creating work this year. We want to offer further support and foster independent producers to do what they do, in a creative space, with guidance from professional producers who are also actively engaged in the independent sector this year.

Critical Stages is therefore proud to launch the Independent Producer Residency, Offering the opportunity for independent producers to use the resources of Critical Stages to produce their shows from our office at the Seymour Centre. The residency provides infrastructure, support, guidance and mentor advice to producers on their productions, pull on the collective knowledge of professional producers and arts administrators on all areas of production including marketing, publicity, casting, design, funding and grant applications. Use us as a sounding board to help you get your show up and running.

We are also offering an insight into the Australian touring sector, with our biggest year to date Critical Stages will have five independent productions out on the road. This is an opportunity to learn the intricacies of the touring landscape and learn what it takes to get a show ready to tour.

We have a minimum of four (4) residencies on offer ranging from 4 weeks to 6 weeks in duration.


Criteria and Application

We only have one criterion for these residencies and that is it is open for those producers that have productions opening in July through to December 2012.

We know that with all the other grant, development, residency etc. applications you have to write we don’t want to add another one to the pile so if this sounds like what you are looking for and you want to be around other producers as you prepare to mount your production, then simply drop us a line either by phone or email and set up a meeting.



Meetings close Friday 18th May and producers will be notified by Friday 25th May.
