Critical Stages nurtures and supports independent artists, working together to bring exceptional experiences to audiences everywhere.

Our vision is to drive a continuous transformation of the performing arts landscape by championing independent artists.

The aims of Critical Stages are:

  • To contribute to the sustainability and growth of the independent theatre sector and set the benchmark for working in partnership with professional theatre artists in Australia.
  • To work in partnership with professional artists to develop, present and tour high quality theatre productions.
  • To partner with professional artists who are not in receipt of regular funding support.
  • To provide artists with theatre production and touring infrastructure and resources that will allow for high quality artistic outcomes.
  • To contribute to the diversity of theatre available to regional audiences.
  • To present multiple artistic visions and grow audiences for artists' productions.
  • To cooperate, build relationships and partner with like-minded organisations.
  • To be fair, inclusive, egalitarian and impartial in all facets of operations.

Critical Stages actively encourages a national conversation between all levels of the theatre landscape; brokering a dialogue between independent artist and major company, producer and presenter, to create opportunities for the exchange of ideas and resources.

Critical Stages was born from the necessity to find further life for outstanding productions from the independent theatre sector. Critical Stages actively seeks out high quality productions from small urban theatres with the aim to develop, produce and manage professional touring opportunities for these productions, encompassing all shows previously generated by artists without the support of a major company infrastructure.

Independent theatre is the crucible of theatre in Australia, it is a place where dedicated and motivated artists produce the shows about which they are most passionate. Critical Stages sees it as vital that audiences across Australia are given the opportunity to see this unique work and that independent theatre productions are showcased on a national platform.
